Timbaland feat. Katy Perry - If We Ever Meet Again
Published 8 February 10 11:14 AM |
charlotte
It's not hyperbole to say that producer and MC Timbaland changed the face of hip-hop and R&B in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Virginia native's revolutionary work with singer/rapper Missy Elliott was unlike anything previously heard in contemporary black music at the time, and it made Timbaland one of the most sought-after producers in the game. He subsequently brought his frenetic avalanche of stuttering beats and synth samples to bear on the music of, among others, Jay-Z, Nelly...

Bananarama - Love Comes
Published 11 September 9 2:22 PM |
charlotte
Harking back to the best of the girl-group era, Bananarama was an adorably droll British vocal trio who briefly hit it big on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1980s. They combined an amateurish charm with a girl-next-door feminine grace, and updated the '60s covers with a smart, modern sensibility. After several radio and video hits, the pinnacle being their electro-pop version of the Shocking Blue's "Venus" from 1986, Bananarama lost singer Siobhan Fahey (who married the Eurythmics'...

Every year a young band, usually 'indie' is proclaimed the 'best new band in Britain' by the NME and other papers. In 2007 it was the turn of Birmingham outfit, the Twang. Sparking a signing frenzy at the tail end of 2006--eventually opting to sign with B-Unique, home to the Kaiser Chiefs and the Automatic--the Twang display the marked influence of 'baggy' legends the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays filtered through the downbeat commentary of fellow Brummie Mike Skinner's...

Turning the music world on its head, Eminem, the blond-haired rapper from Detroit, forced the hip-hop world to accept him as an equal. Despite lyrics full of anger, misogyny, violence, racism, and homophobia, Eminem has been a major commercial success since his debut in 1999, selling records as no black rapper with similar lyrical content ever could. The trio's punk energy and pop hooks, influenced by first-generation punks like the Buzzcocks, in turn inspired a huge legion of punk-pop followers. Depeche Mode - "Wrong"
Published 3 April 9 3:50 PM |

Depeche Mode (French for "hurried fashion") was one of the first and best of the British synth-pop bands, combining breathless, melodic pop with perky electronics. With main songwriter Vince Clarke's departure for Yazoo, Martin Gore took the reigns, and the band's sound became darker and harder, though still true to their trademark synth-driven accessibility. The post-Clarke band's moody dance-pop brought Depeche Mode worldwide superstardom in the second half of the '80s...

T.I. Ft. Justin Timberlake - Dead And Gone
Published 12 March 9 5:42 PM |
charlotte
'Dead And Gone' offers a welcome break from the Europop sound that's infiltrated one too many hip-hop songs of late. Securing Timberlake on this track is the real winner though. His polished, distinctive R&B vocals are seeped with emotion as he despairs about "trying to find his way back home", neatly reminding us that his next album can't be far off now. As for T.I., well, he does an alright job here too.

U2's Bono was one of the few real rock heroes of the 1980s, leading the Irish band to international recognition with a charged, political approach to music. The band's early efforts brought a stadium-size presence to post-punk, with Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's distinct guitar lines interacting seamlessly with the rhythm section of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. In 1987, U2 broke through to superstardom with THE JOSHUA TREE, a grand culmination of their...
