Although St Andrews castle is in a ruined state it has two features that are very popular with visitors. There is a mine dug by attackers during a siege of 1546-7, and a countermine dug by the defenders in an attempt to halt the attack. The countermine successfully connected with the mine, and although both mines were filled in after the siege, they were excavated in the 19th century and can now be explored by visitors. The other popular feature is a bottle dungeon cut into solid rock beneath the Sea Tower. There is on-street parking available in front of the castle
STB Category 3. Wheelchair access is available through the visitor centre – which includes a display with multi-sensory aspects for visitors with visual impairments - and round the ground floor of the castle. There is no access to the bottle dungeon, mines or upper floors of the castle for visitors using wheelchairs or with limited mobility.
The castle grounds are mainly grass and suitable for wheelchairs. A cement path from the visitor centre to the castle allows visitors using wheelchairs to get to the castle easily.
